Visiting Alumni Lecture Series (VALS)

The Visiting Alumni Lecture Series (VALS) fosters partnerships with successful Old Dominion University Alumni and currently enrolled students studying any of the twelve languages, including: Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.  The VALS for foreign languages will highlight the real-life work experiences of Old Dominion University Alumni by providing a platform to discuss their expertise.

These Alumni visits will:

(1) generate interest in diverse career fields requiring foreign language skills, such as: teaching, translation, and business

(2) provide networking possibilities and potential internships

(3) provide an opportunity to meet native speakers from around the world visiting the Hampton Roads community

(4) give current students a chance to practice their language skills with native speakers.

April 13, 2012: Secondary Education in Virginia

VALS 2012 is planned for Friday, April 13 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. and will highlight a roundtable discussion on Secondary Education in Virginia in an effort to address the needs of teacher track students at ODU.  Invited guests to the series will include alumni professionals teaching in the greater Hampton Roads community that can discuss their experiences in the high school classroom.  Considering the current economic challenges coupled with the fact that foreign language education rates among the top ten critical shortage teaching endorsement areas in Virginia, this roundtable discussion comes at an opportune time for graduates as well as those considering the teaching profession.  The VALS guest speakers will offer first-hand knowledge on teaching as a career choice and provide a comprehensive overview of the profession.  Faculty from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and College of Education will also be part of the panel discussion.
