Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures

Students majoring in French, German, or Spanish take thirty hours of foreign language courses at the advanced level in addition to courses selected from a broad, well-balanced curriculum in fulfillment of the university and college requirements in general education. Foreign language majors are encouraged to minor in a discipline of related interest or one relevant to their career objectives such as business, international studies, political science, sociology, or women's studies. Graduates with degrees in foreign languages possess knowledge, communication skills, and critical thinking abilities that qualify them for careers in government, international trade and banking, journalism, law, teaching, and library science, to mention but a few.

In order to broaden their preparation and enhance their career opportunities, many foreign language majors choose minors in other fields such as finance, history, marketing, sociology, speech communications, or international studies.
