Department Goals and Mission

Our goal is to prepare students for today’s globalized marketplace with foreign-language abilities and intercultural expertise. Our students acquire excellent written and verbal communication skills in the target language and culture, and in doing so they also gain a better understanding of their own community.  So it is no surprise that students with a foreign language degree are better equipped for the job market. Congratulations to our German major Zachary R. Fitzpatrick! He was just selected for a Fulbright U.S. Student award for 2013-2014 to Germany. Our Department is very proud of his achievements!

Foreign Languages & Literatures frequently hosts a series of seminars, special events and lectures dealing with cultural, political, social and historical topics attracting an audience from various departments and programs at Old Dominion University.
